Iressa® Shown not to Extend Survival in Clinical Trial

The results from a recent clinical trial show that Iressa® (Gefitinib) failed to significantly prolong survival in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, according to AstraZeneca, which manufactures the drug.

The study involved nearly 1,700 patients who had failed one or more lines of chemotherapy. While the study did show a statistically significant improvement in tumor shrinkage it did not translate into a statistically significant survival benefit.

The initial results of the clinical trial were released on December 17, 2004. A full analysis of the study is expected to be available in the first half of 2005.
