News on Early Detection and Research from the VA and DoD

Lung Cancer Alliance has long supported efforts related to early detection and increased federal funding for lung cancer research. Recently the Veterans Administration (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) highlighted some of their efforts:

The Veterans Administration

The Veterans Administration (VA) will launch lung cancer screening services at 10 VA medical facilities over the next three years.  Several lead researchers of the initiative—Drew Moghanaki, MD, MPH; Claudia Henschke, PhD, MD and Rick Avila, MS—are members of Lung Cancer AllianceMedical and Professional Advisory Board. Read more about the VA initiative in the press release.

Additional information about screening is available from us on the website or through adownloadable brochure.

Federally Funded Research

The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) administered by DoD recently profiled cancer survivor, LCA advocate and CDMRP Lung Cancer Research Program peer reviewer Laura Greco. Read the profile and find out why she’s an advocate.

A focus of our advocacy priorities in Congress is to maintain full and continuous funding of lung cancer research within CDMRP administered by DoD. Lung Cancer Alliance also annually nominates consumer peer reviewers, like Laura Greco, to the Lung Cancer Research Program of the CDMRP.
