U.S. Senate Passes 21st Century Cures Act

Wendesday December 7, 2016 - Today, the US Senate took the final vote to pass theĀ 21st Century Cures Act. The legislation will be signed into law by President Obama immediately and go on to accelerate research and the delivery of new therapies for many diseases.

This long awaited legislation provides $4.8 billion in new funding for the National Institute of Health, including $1.8 billion for the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative. Getting the bill passed authorized cancer research funding, but Congress also has to appropriate the funding in the annual Appropriations Bill. Last night, Appropriators released a new Continuing Resolution (CR) that extends funding for federal programs through April 2017. This includes 21st Century Cures funding for the NIH of which $300 million will be set aside specifically for cancer research.

LCA applauds the work of Congress and recognizes the support of the community at large, who rallied together and worked in a bipartisan and bicameral spirit to accomplish what is the most significant legislation of this Congress.
