Washington, DC [April 22,2013]—Today, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authority to develop new graphic cigarette warnings that comply with the landmark 2009 law granting the FDA authority over tobacco products, including the requirement for large, graphic cigarette warning labels. The new warnings will help further inform Americans about the deadly consequences of smoking.
“For young people who have been the target of massive deceptive marketing campaigns by tobacco companies for decades, and even referred to as ‘replacement smokers,’ graphic warnings may help them say no to that first cigarette or encourage them to quit,” said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, Lung Cancer Alliance President & CEO. “We applaud this ruling which allows such ads to remain important weapons in the battle against smoking and needless tobacco-related death.”
“In addition to today’s Supreme Court ruling,” continued Fenton Ambrose, “we also have scientific validation by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the life-saving benefit of low dose CT screening to help those who are at risk for lung cancer. We can and should be combining prevention and cessation messages with early detection as an additional strategy in the battle against needless tobacco related death. This comprehensive approach will bring even greater benefits to those victimized by Big Tobacco.”
