Washington, DC [April 21, 2009] -- After four years of survey and data collection, the federal government determined that PET scans are a "reasonable and necessary" for initial treatment decisions on most solid cancer tumors and they will be covered by Medicare and Medicaid. In addition, Medicare and Medicaid will also cover follow-up PET scans for nine cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer. More data are still being collected on follow-up PET scans for other types of cancers including small cell lung cancer. The initial PET scan will be covered, but subsequent PT scans will only be covered if the clinicians offering the scans participate in the still on-going surveys for these other cancers. Senior citizens are urged to check with their doctors. In letters to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), LCA strongly supported this expansion of coverage.
