Since 2004, we have participated in an annual lung cancer workshop sponsored by Prevent Cancer Foundation (PCF) focused on driving discoveries between many different types of research and researchers related to the risk assessment, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Over the years, it became increasingly clear that researchers were being held back by one common propblem: the lack of enough CT scans coupled with clinical histories and data.
As previous public and private efforts failed, we agreed to take on the challenge. With technical guidance from Kitware, Inc, the Give A Scan program was developed and tested through two pilot programs. The success of that first pilot program led to the official launch of the Give A Scan program in 2010. Give A Scan has been hailed as the first and only patient powered open access website advancing lung cancer research.
Now, with the support of Siemens Healthcare, we are able to expand the reach of Give A Scan in a more broad and national way and enable patients, loved ones and those at risk to be the drivers of progress for lung cancer. The national expansion took place in November 2013.
