Palliative care

Cancer and its treatments can cause many unwanted symptoms and side effects, both physical and emotional. Palliative care can provide relief and improve quality of life at all stages of cancer diagnosis and treatment.

More information on palliative care, including links to the 2007 American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Palliative Care in Lung Cancer Guidelines and the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) recommendation that all patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer be offered palliative care along with standard cancer therapy, can be found on the main Lung Cancer Alliance website here

Learn about palliative care

An important study published in 2010 study found that patients with metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer who received palliative care early on and throughout their treatment not only had improved quality of life but also lived longe. You can read the study here: Temel et al. 2010. Early palliative care for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. New England Journal of Medicine 363:733-742.
